Introduction: Paul And Silas In Philippi, Preaching The Gospel.
1. They Healed The Woman Possessed Of Evil Spirits. (Acts 16:16-18)
2. Because Of This, They Were Beaten, Thrown In Jail. (Acts 16:19-24)
3. An Earthquake Occurs; Prisoners Are Free, Paul And Silas Stay. (Acts 16:25-29)
4. The Jailer Knows Immediately – the Hand Of God Is In This Event!
5. The Jailer Asks The Greatest Question: “Sirs, What Must I Do To Be Saved?”
A. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE.
1. The Jailer Understood What Many Today Do Not: Man Must Do Something.
2. God Requires That Man Respond To His Offer Of Salvation: Act!
3. Many Religions Today Teach You Don’t Need To Do Anything: WHY?
a. Some Classify Any Action Of Man As A Work – “Works Don’t Save”.
b. Some Teach God Only Makes It Known - “We Are Already Healed” Isaiah 53:5
4. However, If Man Need Do Nothing, Then Even Belief Is Unnecessary! John 20:30,31
5. Jesus Said: He Would Shed His Blood For The Remission Of Sins. Matt. 26:28
B. PAUL RESPONDED TO THE REQUEST: HERE IS WHAT YOU DO.
1. The Matter Could Have Been Settled For All Time Right Here! All Paul Needed To
Do Was To Say: “There’s nothing you need to do, for you are already saved!”
2. Instead, Paul Told The Jailer He Needed To Do Something. Acts 16:31, 32
a. Taught The Man That Belief In Jesus Was Necessary To Be Saved.
b. Then Instructed Him HOW To Do It – “… spake unto him the word of the Lord …”
3. Similar To What The Lord Taught In Mark And Luke. Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:47
4. We Find In Every Case Of Conversion, People Are Taught To Do Something.
5. In Each Case Of Conversion, These Things Were Evident: Preaching Of Gospel,
Response Indicating Belief, Recognition By Hearers That Jesus Is The Christ, Teaching
Of Need Of Repentance Ending With Believers Being Baptized.
6. Examples?
a. Those Who Heard Peter On Pentecost Believed His Message. Acts 2:37, 38, 41
b. After Healing Of Lame Man At Temple, Many Believed. Acts 3:19; 4:1-4
c. Apostles Preached Jesus At Every Opportunity. Acts 5:42
d. Samaritans Believed That Preaching: Responded To It. Acts 8:4-6, 12, 13
e. Eunuch, Cornelius, Lydia: Hear, Believe, Obey. Acts 8:37-38; 10:38-43, 48; 16:14,15
f. Even An Enemy Obeys: Saul Of Tarsus. Acts 22:12-16
7. We Find In Every Event, The Gospel Was Preached, And Those Who Believed It,
Were Those Who Obeyed It And Had Their Sins Forgiven.
C. WE MUST DO THESE THINGS IN THE ORDER GOD AUTHORIZED.
1. Can’t Confess Before We Know Christ: Hear The Gospel. Reject Idea: Already Saved!
2. Can’t Be Baptized Before We Repent Of Our Sins. Reject Idea: Infant Baptism.
3. Can’t Have Sins Remitted Before We Are Baptized. Reject Idea: “Vote” For Baptism.
4. Can’t Change Order And Get Promised Results: Reject Idea: Believe, Save, Be Baptized.
D. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THESE THINGS ?
1. The Promise Of God Is Fulfilled: Man Is Saved From Sin. Luke 19:10
2. Being Saved, God Places Us In The Body Of Christ: The Church. Acts 2:47
3. However, It Is Possible For One To Sin Again. Acts 8:18-24
4. We See What We Then Need To Do: Repent And Pray God For Forgiveness.
5. This Is Consistent With What Apostles Taught. James. 4:6-10; 1 John. 1:6 - 2:2
Conclusion: Who Believed It Was Necessary For Man To Be Saved?
1. God Did – He Sent His Only Begotten Son To Die So We Can Be Saved.
2. Jesus Did – He Willingly Died On The Cross And Shed His Blood For Our Salvation.
3. Apostles Did – They Preached It EVERYWHERE And To EVERYONE.
4. Satan Does – He Continues To Work To Destroy The Souls Of Everyone.
5. The Question Is: Do You Believe It Is Necessary? If So, What Have You Done About It!!
